The Byzantine Empire Significance

- About 50 years after the fall of Rome, the Byzantine Emperor Justinian came to power & began reconquering Roman territories. Justinian ordered legal experts to consolidate old Roman laws into a single law code. The code came into use around the year 530 and continued to be used as a base of the Byzantine law until the fall of the empire in 1453. This code was significant because it was the basis of law for an empire for over 900 years.
- The Byzantine Empire protected Europe from invaders by building a series of walls, which insulated Europe and kept them safe from enemies. By doing this it allowed for Europe to recover from the medieval period. They built this wall upon and extended earlier fortifications so that the city became impregnable to enemy sieges. The fortifications were the largest and strongest ever built in either the ancient or medieval world.
- The Byzantine Empire influenced many cultures, primarily due to its role in shaping Christian Orthodoxy. The modern-day Eastern Orthodox Church is the second largest Christian church in the world. Byzantine empire was very religious, and it held certain values in high esteem, including a respect for order and traditional hierarchies.
