Storyboard Text

  • Harriet was born around 1820 and 1822. She became a slave at a very young age of around five or six years old where she was rented out as a servant. She experienced a lot of violence at a young age because she was born into slavery. 
  • Harriet married a free man in 1844 and it was quite common to have a free husband and wife and an enslaved husband or wife. They did not have any children otherwise they would have been born into slavery.
  • Later Harriet discovered the Underground Railway station in 1849 but her husband refused to make the journey with her and stayed back with his new wife who was free.
  • Harriet married a Civil War veteran and they adopted a child with her husband. Their child was called Guthrie.
  • Harriet escaped slavery with her brothers while her owner fell sick and was about to die. Harriet was not caught and she never lost any passengers (slaves who were escaping) There was a time when an award of $40,000 was offered to capture Harriet 
  • Harriet was now a conductor and helped other passengers escape helping them find food, shelter and guiding them until she passed the North border where she was no longer a slave and was free.
