Siege of Vicksburg

- May 18 1863 Grants army approached Vicksburg
- With the first few days Grant tried to break into the city with his high numbers. This did not work
- He decided that they would constantly bomb them until they ran out if food.
- When the people ran out if food in a matter of weeks, the started ti eat dogs, cats, horses, even rats and tree bark.
- No one could safely walk on the streets and people had to stay in their houses or had to dig holes in hills.
- The Siege of Vicksburg was an amazing victory for the union. They gained control of the Mississippi River. The confederate army under General Robert E. Lee was defeated at the Battle of Gettysburg. This was all in favor of the union.
