- Ikemefuna has lived with Okonkwo and his family for 3 years and has greatly influenced Nwoye.
- Ezuedu tells Okonkwo what the Umofia Oracle has decided to do with Ikemefuna.
- Poor Ikemefuna
- Umuofia has decided to kill the boy. I don't want you to be a part of his death, for he calls you father.
- While the men take Ikemefuna to go "visit his mother" he is struck by a machete. Okonkwo finishes him off so that he doesn't seem weak, but something breaks inside of him.
- I have to be strong...
- That'll teach 'em not to kill our people again!
- The district commissioner and his guards arrive at Okonkwo’s compound demanding to see him.
- Bring me Okonkwo at this instant!
- I have no idea where he is...
- Obierka agrees to take the commissioner to Okonkwo.
- Try anything funny, and I will have you shot...
- Don't you play with me boy!
- Fine, fine. Come with me.
- Whatever.
- They discover Okonkwo hanging from a tree; he committed suicide, and since it is an abomination to take one’s own life, his corpse is considered evil and can only be touched by strangers.
- No!! He was such a good man! This is your fault!
- He has to be touched by a stranger, for his corpse is evil.
- Oh, shut up! Someone come take this man down from the tree and bury him!
