  • Hi! I'm Abby and I'm going to talk about if America during the colonial era moved closer or farther from the 5 ideals
  • The five American ideals are democracy, equality, liberty, opportunity, and rights, I think that we moved farther away from these ideals because of 3 different events, The Salem witch trials, the Colonization of Jamestown, and the Middle Passage
  • The Salem witch trials happened when two kids got sick randomly and they thought they were using witchcraft on them even though they probably just got sick. More people got sick and the people who got sick accused people of witchcraft and If they didn’t “confess” they were using it, they would be hung, about 150 people were accused of witchcraft and 20 were hung, people believed they were witches because of their religion
  • The next thing is the colonization of Jamestown. After a uncertain start and a tragic winter called the Starving time, the colony of Jamestown succeeded because of women, tobacco, and democracy. More and more people came to colonial America after the first "successful colony", but lots of people then got sick and a lot of the people died, At one point they struggled with profit and a high death toll from it.
  • The middle passage is when they took poor people and put them on a ship, locked them up, sent them across the sea to be sold as slaves, thinking about it in present day, its really really sad and upsetting.10,240,200 people were taken during the middle passage and about 2 million died. If someone was sick they were thrown overboard to prevent other slaves from getting sick because the more slave, the more money
  • Because of all of these things that happened in colonial America, this is why I think that we moved farther from the ideals
