Storyboard Text

  • Newton's First Law: The Law Of InertiaNewton's first law states that if a body is at rest (not moving) or moving at a constant speed, it will continue to do so until a force acting on it changes. (Meaning that if it is not moving, it will continue to not move, or if it is moving, it will continue to move, until there is a change in the forces acting on it.
  • Newton's Second Law: F=MANewton's second law states that the force of an object (F) is equal to the mass of the object multiplied by it's acceleration. If you apply a force to a mass, it will accelerate. If you apply more force, it will accelerate more. An unbalanced force is a force acting on an object that is greater than the opposing force acting on it.
  • Newton's Third Law: Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.The Third Law describes how every action has a reaction. This means that forces work in pairs, with every force having another force working on the same object at the same time.
  • For example, if someone is running at the same speed, they will continue to run at the same speed, unless they speed up by increasing their thrust (forward push), or they slow down due to an increase in friction (like if they were running through sand).
  • An example of Newton's second law in action would be a soccer ball and a bowling ball rolling down a hill. The bowling ball will accelerate more (go faster) because it has more mass. 
  • An instance of the third law in action would be when a car's forward movement is opposed by friction from the air and road.
