  • In the early 18th century the Ngati Paoa and Tamaki Makaurau tribes started their migration. Ngati Paoa is a maori iwi of the Hauraki Region of New Zealand.
  • Between 1740-1750, Ngati Whatua-o-Kaipara moved south invading the isthmus and killing chiefs including Nai-o-Hua. By killing the chief they had the advantage of taking his last Pa of Mangere.
  • From 1600-1750 the Tamaki Tribes terraced the volcanic cones, and took it as their own, and started building their own Pa.
  • Then, in 1821 wanting to avenge the previous defeats by Tamaki Tribes, the Ngapuhi leader Hongi Hika launched a series of attacks on the region. With around 2,000 men alongside him he killed and enslaved hundreds and gained more land.
  • In around 1825, four years later, Ngapuhi attacked again. This time they had a different target which was Ngati Whatua. The battle known as Te Ika-a-Ranganui-was found near Kaiwaka.
  • Although Ngati Whatua had over 1,000 warrior on their side, the other 500 strong invading force was armed with muskets and weapons and crushed their old foe. The chief of Ngati Whatua abandoned the isthmus and took his people into exile.
