  • If I win this battle, I can release the Emancipation Proclamation. I want this battle to happen!

  • Abraham Lincoln wanted for this battle happen because he would be able to release the Emancipation Proclamation which gets rid of slavery. The Confederate thought that they would win this battle too because they won at Fort Sumter and Manassas

  • After the Confederates abandoned this camp, the Union moved in. Later on, two union soldiers found cigars wrapped in paper. The paper was actually General Lee's battle plans. General Lee found one Special Order was missing, so he panicked and knew The Union had it

  • In Maryland, September 17, 1862, one of the bloodiest battles on American soil happened. About 23,000 casualties occurred. 3,000 soldiers died from each side, others wounded or captured.

  • 12 hours later, the Confederates decided to fall back to Virginia. The Union took this as a win even though it is considered a stalemate. The Confederates were originally coming to convince border states to join them as well as France and Britain.

  • Even though Lincoln considered this a win, he still fired General McClellan because he wasn't aggressive enough. In other words, he didn't follow them and let them run away. This made Lincoln mad because he wanted this war to end quickly.
  • Since he took this battle as a win, he released The Emancipation Proclamation. This stated that all slaves were to be freed in the confederate states. Also, it said slaves are not being freed in border states.
