- The mountain men moved west for fur trading and gold. They also set up farms and harvesting for a new way of life.

- The Oregon Trail 2,000 mile route west to Oregon Country. In 1843, Pioneers traveled West in wagon trains. Pioneers had to make the journey in five months to beat the mountain snow and traveled 15 miles a day. At dawn you wake up to a bugle, girls help prepare food, boys harness horses and oxen. Rough terrain, rivers, mountains , Large amounts of gear,often had to leave things behind, Weather, blistering heat, biting cold, snow, rain , Sickness, cholera and other diseases spread quickly.

- The annexation of Texas upset Mexico, so the Americans fought a war to gain control over more land. At the end of the war, the US expanded its's boundaries to obtain more land in the west.
- Mormons moved west to Utah to see refuge from persecution due to their beliefs. The Mormons believed that property should be owned in common and men could have more than one wife.
- John Sutter discovered gold in CA in 1848. People from all over the world rushed to CA to find gold.
