- "Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it."

- "Scout yonder's been readin'ever since she was born, and she ain't even started school yet." (Page 7). This shows that Scout was a bit smart than usual for her age.

- "Then if he's not dead you've got one, haven't you?" (Page 8)This shows that Scout is not that self-aware and can be a bit too pushy.
- "Dill blushed and Jem told me to hush, a sure sign that Dill had been studied and found acceptable." This shows that Dill kows when to set limits for people.
- (jem is running to the Radleys Home)
- "'I won't say you ran out on a dare an' I'll swap you The Gray Ghost if you just go up and touch the house.' Jem brightened. 'Touch the house, that's all?' Dill nodded." This shows that Jem will risk it if there's a good reward.
