  • The Peppered Moth
  • Variations
  • Industrial Revolution
  • The peppered moths are most commonly found in England, Europe, and North America. They are smaller than most people except, only 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide. The most common of these peppered moths have light wings with black spots "peppered" on them, hence the name, peppered moths.
  • Competition
  • The most common types of peppered moths are the ones with light wings and black spots on them. The most rare types of peppered moths are the dark, almost black, peppered moths. In between these two extremes there are the peppered moths that aren't completely black but have more spots than the common peppered moth.
  • Survival of the Fittest
  • Before the Industrial Revolution happened, all the trees were white with lichens, which are organisms that are part algae and part fungus or bacteria. After the Industrial Revolution, all the bark on the trees became dark and bare, changing the habitat of the moths.
  • Evolution
  • After the Industrial Revolution the habitat changed from light trees with lichens to dark and bare trees, which means the dark moths were the fittest because light peppered moths couldn't camouflage in their habitat as well as the dark peppered moths. This means they had to compete to camouflage so that they can survive and not be eaten by predators.
  • The fittest moths are the black moths because once the habitat changed, the black moths could camouflage better and hide from predators. This helps them because they won't get eaten if they can camouflage with the trees.
  • The moth population will change over time because the dark moths will live longer and reproduce whereas the light moths will get hunted down and eaten by the predators.
