  • Mauna Kea is important for so many reasons to the Native Hawaiians. Mauna Kea is where Mother Earth, and Father Sky first met. Mauna Kea is also a burial ground and an embodiment of ancestors.
  • It is also home to many archaeological sites and many cultural properties
  • Undue Burden forbids religious practices if they are not significant, or have a chance to causes problems.
  • Does Mauna Kea strike you as an undue Burden?
  • No. Mauna Kea has been a place of religious practices for many years, and the only problems caused on this sacred site are the ones caused by the Government
  • My family has come to this mountain for many Generations, and this site is a big part of connecting with our ancestors, and #160;one another.
  • How so?
  • Well many of our indigenous people still live here, and this allows us to keep our traditions. However, if the government were to take that away we would lose the land our ancestors created.
  • What would you tell the government for them to understand the importance of this place for your people?
  • Imagine if we came in to the town you grew up in. The town where your parents, and grand parents , and their parents grew up. What if we said,#160;Sorry we must use this town for research, and anything that does not have written proof of importance must be torn down.
