  • In 1527 Huayna Capac a powerful Incan Emperor who had ruled for 34 years had died. The kingdom was divided between two sons: Huascar and Atahualpa. Huascar received most of the imperial lands. Atahualpa received the northern part of the empire. The Inca Empire was split by a civil war over who would be crowned the new Sapa Inca.Atahualpa was victorious and became the Inca emperor. He took Huascar prisoner and then killed most of the royal family to prevent disputes over the succession.

They crossed the desert of Sechura and climbed the Andes Mountains.Atahualpa knew their every move and sent messengers to them with gifts.Pizarro sent messengers to Atahualpa to invite him to dine at Cajamarca.Atahualpa accepted and when he arrived there was not a Spaniard in site.

  • Pizarro and his men then moved on to occupy Cuzco the ancient capital of the Incas. The Incas decided to retaliate against the Spaniards andlay siege to Cuzco by setting the houses and towns on fire and under the cover of the smoke; they entered the city putting up barricades. The Spanish regained control of the area but the new Inca, Manco Inca continued to resist in the mountains for eight more years.
  • It took the Spanish government 40 years to re-establish peaceful and orderly government in the court. They stripped the Inca empire of any gold, silver and jewels that they could find.Almagro was strangled in 1538 and Pizarro was murdered in 1541 and his brother was beheaded in 1548.The Spaniards destroyed a system of government and those who resisted were eventually enslaved. The Spaniards tried to rule through the reigning Inca but the last Lord Inca, Tupac Amaru was put to death in 1571.The Spanish influence had extended to Quito, Bogota and Santiago de Chile.
