In the beginning of the book Mary Maloney is seated down by her husband to discuss an important matter that ends up affecting them forever

Mary gets ready to face the police rehearsing making sure everything about her seemed normal.
The Police come to Mary's house to investigate the murder.
She knew the number of the police station, and when the man at the other end answered, she cried to him, “Quick! Come quick! Patrick’s dead!” [77 Daul]
You must be terrible hungry by now because it’s long past your suppertime, and I know Patrick would never forgive me, God bless his soul, if I allowed you to remain in his house without offering you decent hospitality. [116 Daul]
Mary offers the men the murder weapon as a meal to get rid of any evidence at all.
Her plan succeeds and Mary Maloney knows that she has officially gotten away with the murder
