- In 1863, Virginia and Tim were farmers and heard the news about the Homestead Act.
- John was telling me that President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act and is giving away free land.
- Well, I sold everything to John to pay all our debt, and we're leaving tomorrow to Oregon. We need to leave soon before they take the good land.
- That sounds too good to be true. We don't know anything about the West. I don't think its a good idea.
- After 4 weeks of traveling,
- Of course we did the right choice! We didn't have anything but debt. And when does the President gives away land for free?! We'll farm and have a lot of animals.
- Tim, do you think we did the right choice leaving everything behind to start all over again?
- Couple of months later, they arrive to Oregon and have difficulty farming due to the lack of water and rain...
- It's been over 6 months and we still don't have any crops. How are we going to survive or keep the land if nothing is growing?!
- I'm sorry Virginia, I thought it was going to be easy. I have hope that it will finally start raining so our crops can grow.
- Okay Tim, I will not give up and have faith that it will rain. Let's go to the river.
- We should work hard by planting all of our seeds. I have a feeling that it will rain soon, meanwhile, we should go to the river and carry water for our crops.
- A month later...
- This has been so hard carrying water for 2 miles. I'm so tired, we should go back home.
- THUMP!
- You're right...Oh wait, did you hear that?! I think its going to rain!!!
- 5 years later, they were able to farm their crops and opened their own market, which brought them good fortune.
- Yes, hard work pays off at the end! Now that we are good at farming, we finally opened our market and are finally happy.
- After 5 years of hard work, we finally keep the land! I'm so glad you worked hard!
