  • In Chapter 1, Ponyboy Curtis is walking home from the movie theatres when he spots a red Corvair following him. 5 socs jumped him, but the commotion drew the gang to him, and they scared away the Socs. The gang consists of Ponyboys two brothers, Darry and Sodapop, Steve Randle, Keith (Two-Bit) Mathews, Dallas (Dally) Winston, and Johnny Cade. All of them were as tight as brothers, showing the theme of family.
  • That poem describes what I was thinking perfectly!
  • In Chapter 3, Pony gets home late after accidentally falling asleep in the lot with Johnny. Darry is really mad and scared because he didn't know where Pony was and he starts yelling. Soda tries to intervene but Darry yells at him too, causing Pony to shout as well. Out of instinct, Darry whirls and slaps Pony. This causes Pony to think that Darry doesn't care about him, so he runs away telling Johnny to come with him. Darry was so worried about Pony showing the theme of family.
  • Stay gold Ponyboy
  • You can't die Johnny, you just can't!
  • At the end of Chapter 3 and the beginning of Chapter 4, Pony and Johnny decide to walk to the park to calm down before heading back to the house, but while they are there, Bob, Randy, and a couple of other Socs pull up to the fountain. One of the Socs grabs Pony and shoves his head under the water, drowning him. Johnny, in an effort to save his friend, stabs Bob, killing him. They go to Dally who agrees to help them escape. This shows the theme of family because both Johnny and Dally did extreme things in order to save each other.
  • Don't die Dally! Not you too!
  • What are you doing Dally! They don't know the gun isn't loaded!
  • Dally lifts the unloaded gun at the police
  • In Chapter 5, Pony and Johnny are staying at the Windrixville Church, which is where Dally told them to go, and they are both doing things to keep each other happy. Once Dally gets there, Johnny decides to turn himself in, but as they are leaving, they see the church on fire with children inside. Immediately, Johnny and Pony run in to get the children out. However, after the children are out, Pony's jacket catches on fire, and Johnny is hit in the back by a falling beam. Dally gets both of them out of the church. This shows the theme of family because Dally risked his life going back for Johnny.
  • Pony and Johnny watch the sunset and discuss Robert Frost's "Nothing Gold can Stay"
  • I'm still not sure what Robert Frost meant by it.
  • In Chapter 9, the greasers win the rumble, and immediately Dally and Pony rush to the hospital to tell Johnny the good news. However, almost as soon as they told him, he told Ponyboy to "stay gold" and dies. Dally starts freaking out right away saying, "Oh, damnit, Johnny, don't die, please don't die...", and then he runs out like a crazy person. This suggests a sense of family because Dally can't stand Johnny dying.
  • Johnny dies and Dally runs out
  • In Chapter 10, all of the gang members, except for Johnny and Dally, come to the house to celebrate, mourn, and wish Pony better, before getting a phone call from Dally. They rush to the lot only to see Dally round the corner with the police right behind him. He raises the unloaded gun at the police, forcing them to shoot him. He dies there because he couldn't stand to live a life without Johnny which suggests a strong sense of family.
