  • Wassup gangster, I was looking into my future and with all this calc and stuff I been thinking about a civil engineer
  • oh for real?
  • Yea its really cool, as a civil engineer you are responsible for building large construction projects like bridges, highways, and skyscrapers. Also I learned that similar to what we learned in APES we also have to be environmentally conscious.
  • Dude this is so cool. My sister is actually at NC State university majoring in Civil engineering I bet she would be down to explain more.
  • Thank you so much for having us Cora! What are some of the classes you have to take to get your degree in this field.
  • Well, vector and differential calculus are necessary as well as more engineering-focused math such as Ordinary Differential Equations for Engineers (CME 102) or Ordinary Differential Equations (MATH 53).
  • Hey Knox and Will! Welcome to NC State, the best university in North Carolina to study Civil Engineering!
  • Well first I complete my ABET-credited degree that ensures coursework in mathematics, statistics, fluid dynamics, and engineering mechanics and systems. Then moving into field work, I have to receive my engineering in training certificate through North Carolina. After this I will earn my Professional Engineer License and then become employed
  • So Cora! What are your next steps in this profession?
  • Yea it is! But remember make sure you are doing well in Mrs. Bolden's calculus class. You need to learn how to derive basic fluid mechanics equations. For example, hydraulic analysis programs, which aid in the design of storm drain in this site use calculus numerical methods to obtain the results.
  • Cora I can't believe that you get to do field work in an actual construction sites! Without civil engineers the infrastructure, the houses, and the offices we all live by would be non-existent.
  • Yeah, so chain rule and derivatives is something we use almost everyday. For example I was given the amount of water leaving a water tank and I had to find the rate with how the height of the water tank was changing. So this is a really important topic.
  • So Cora from all that you can remember what topic of calculus do you use the most?
