Can you defend the border for me? Thanks. (Don't go into Florida!!!)
Sure...
Ha! Ha! Ha!No.
The US had just expanded with the Louisiana Territory, and finally got France away from their borders. But Spain still occupied much of North America...
Help!
Settlers in Georgia, bordering Spanish Florida, were angry because their towns were being raided by natives in Florida and slaves were escaping there as well.
Apologize?
They're too busy with Napoleon anyway...
I got it! Threaten Spain!
What should we do?!!?
Spain: Govern or go home!(and then will pay some debts and you can give us Florida)
So, President James Monroe sent Andrew Jackson to defend the border, and only the border, but...
Okay...fine.
After sending a hasty letter to Monroe and getting no answer, Jackson decided to go into Florida and take it over, conquering all the Spanish forts and killing two british citizens.
Spain and Britain are getting pretty mad by now, and most of Monroe's cabinet tell him to apoligize and beg for mercy except for John Quincy Adams, who tells him to threaten Spain. Spain is currently in a war with Napoleon and can't start another with the U.S.
So with the phrase, "Govern or go home!" Spain leaves and U.S. lets go 5,000 in debts to buy Florida. And they all live happily ever after.
