- In the Old Regime which had existed in France and most of Europe since the Middle Ages, countries were ruled by absolutism, the monarch had full control over the gov. and citizens.The classes of people were the privileged and the unprivileged. The unprivileged had to pay all taxes.
- Estates-General Meeting
- Because of King Louis XVI spending money on himself/palaces and Queen Marie Antoinette spending money on costly fashion, plus the government finding its funds depleted from war, France is is in huge debt and increased taxes to the unprivileged and the Third Class.
- The National Assembly and the Storming of the Bastille
- We need to storm the Bastille! The nerve!!!
- The Third Estate is influenced by the ideas of enlightenment: equality of all people, overthrowing bad government, and people were inspired by the success of the American Revolution. People questioned the divine right of the monarchy and wanted reform.
- Constitution of 1791
- Finally, the first constitution!!
- On May 5, 1789, The King calls the Estate General, representatives of all 3 states to solve France's financial crisis. Voting was conducted by estate, each estate had one vote. Third estate representatives demanded to vote by population.
- I demand to vote by population!
- Louis XVI did not want a written constitution. When news of his plan to use military force against the National Assembly reached Paris on July 14, 1789, people stormed the Bastille. Angry members of the Third Estate did too, and this becomes France's independence day.
- National Assembly produces France's first constitution, France became a limited monarchy, all laws were created by the legislative assembly, feudalism was abolished.
