- Peyton Farquhar is about to be hanged by Union soldiers for trying to burn down the Owl Creek Bridge.
- Climax
- A union soldier dressed as a Confederate soldier comes to Peyton’s house and tells him about the bridge and how he could help by burning it down.
- Falling Action
- Peyton goes to burn the bridge down, but is caught by Union soldiers and is to be hanged
- Conclusion
- The rope snaps and Peyton swims falls into the river, he swims downstream and evades bullets shot from the Union soldiers.
- He reaches the shore and notices how strange the patterns of trees and the road is while traveling back home.
- Peyton was actually just imagining everything since the flashback, he never escaped and is actually dead,
