Storyboard Text

  • The seeds also symbolize Willy's failure with Biff. Despite the American Dream and its formula for success which Willy considered impossible to fail, he realized that his all American football star turned into a lazy bum and Willy takes Biff's failure as a reflection of his abilities as a father.
  • In Death of a Salesman the seeds were a symbol of willy trying to prove the worth of his labor, both as a salesman and a father. His desperate attempt to grow vegetables at night by planting seeds signifies his shame of barley being able to provide for his family and having nothing to leave his children when he passes.
  • New stockings were important for Willy's pride in being succesful and to provide for his family and for willy's ability to ease his guilt about his betrayal of Linda and Biff.
  • In the play, the stockings were a symbol of betrayal and sexual infidelity. Willy's weird obsession with the condition of Linda's stockings forshadowed his flashback to Biff's dicovery of him and the Woman in the Boston hotel room.
  • The diamonds were introduced with the discovery of which made Ben a fortune and simbolized Willy's failure of a salesman. To Willy, the diamonds represented wealth and validation of labor and life, and the ability to pass material goods onto his family which Willy desperately craved.
  • Despite Willy's belief in the American Dream, the oportunity that he passed up to go to Alaska with Ben ruinied the dreams promise of finacial security for Willy. At the end of the play Ben encourages Willy to enter the "jungle" to retreive the diamond, which really meant to kill himself for insurance money to make his life meaningful.
