  • It's Tan time!
  • Looking at this picture we know that the base of the tree , the top of the tree , to the nut forms a right angle triangle. We also already know that the angle from the nut to the tree's base is 74°. We also know that the length side of the triangle is 14ft (opposite) To solve the distance between the nut and the tree's base we need to know the length of the opposite side of the triangle (adjacent). To find the missing side we'll be using TOA or tan 0 = opposite / adjacent.
  • Using our formula tan 0 = opposite / adjacent we'll find the opposite side of the triangle. tan ( 74°) = opposite / 14ft We know that the angle (tangent) is 74° and we also know that the length (adjacent) is 14ft\. solve the opposite. (14) tan 74 = opposite ________________ (14) 14ft opposite = 14 tan 74° opposite = 14 • 3.487 opposite = 48.824ft
  • The nut is 40.824 ft. from the base of this here tree!
  • AW NUTS! ALL THIS TRIGINOMRETY HAS MADE ME I'M HUNGRY
  • Getting my cosine on
  • Now that we've solved how far the base of the tree is from the nut. We need to solve how far the nut is from the math squirrel. In this problem we'll be using CAH or cosine to find the distance between the nut and the squirrel (hypotenuse) .
  • The nut is 50.791ft from me!
  • Using the formula cos 0 = adjacent / hypotenuse we'll find the hypotenuse of the triangle. cos 0= ( 74°) = adjacent / hypotenuse we know that the angle (tan) is 74° and we know that the length (adjacent) is 14ft. Solve the hypotenuse cos 0= hypotenuse = 14 / cos ( 74°)hypotenuse = 14 ______ 0.276hypotenuse = 50.791 ft.
  • THANK YOU SOHCAHTOA!!!!1
  • By using SOHCAHTOA we were able to find the distance between the base of the tree and the nut using TOA (tan) and the distance between the math squirrel and the nut using CAH (cos). Thereby solving the opposite side length (adjacent) and the hypotenuse of our right angle triangle.
