Rising Action
I'm Bruno. Let's be friends!
It's nice to meet you, my name is Shmuel.
The book starts off when Bruno comes home from school and sees their family maid, Maria, packing The up his stuff in his room. Bruno’s family is moving away for his father’s job and he is very upset.
Climax
Bruno’s family has arrived at their new house in Auschwitz. He has conflict with his parents, because he is angry he had to leave his best friends back in Berlin, and missed their old home. He is frustrated that he will have no one to play with and that his mother won’t let him go exploring.
FaFalling Action
Bruno goes against his mother’s orders and goes outside to explore. He finds a fence and runs along it, leading him to a boy named Shmuel, on the other side of the fence. Shmuel is in a concentration camp, but Bruno doesn't know that. Bruno notes that Shmuel is very dirty and skinny, but he is happy because he has someone new to talk to and play with.
Resolution
Bruno continues to see Shmuel every day, for several months. They become very close friends, and Bruno brings him food every time they meet. Nobody knows that they are friends. But Bruno finds out that he, his sister and mother are returning to Berlin and tells Shmuel he wants to have one last adventure. Shmuel mentions that his father has gone missing and he needs help finding him, Bruno sees this as an adventure for him and crawls under the fence for the last time.
Let's do this!!
Bruno and Shmuel are walking around the camp. Bruno is shocked about how different and sad the camp is than he thought it was. They search around for hours, but come up with nothing about how Shmuel’s father disappeared or where he went. A soldier blows a whistle, and Shmuel looks panicked, knowing what's going to happen. The clouds start to get dark and a storm threatens. Bruno gets a bad feeling and tells Shmuel he should leave, but Shmuel tells him he can’t, and that Bruno needs to blend in with everyone else or he will be killed.
It's so much different than I thought...
Bruno and Shmuel are forced to “march” along with a huge group of other camp members. It starts to rain, but soon they are led into a dark room and the door shuts behind them. Bruno is relieved at first, but is unsure what is happening and gets scared. He looks over at Shmuel and can see he is very anxious as well. Bruno holds his best friend’s hand, and waits to see what happened. That day, Bruno and Shmuel were murdered in a gas chamber along with everyone else in the camp. His family never knew or understood what ever happened to Bruno or why he disappeared, and it sent them into a world of pain and grief for a very long time.
