Storyboard Text

  • The American Revolution occurred prior to the Haitian Revolution in 1783, and it was this that inspired the Haitians in the first place.
  • This is Saint Domingue in the country of Haiti, where the French ruled the land and trade.
  • On August 21, 1791, black slaves in the northern plantations rose up against the plantation owners for whom they worked crops.
  • The Gens de Couleur were free people of color of African and European ancestry; they were not enslaved, and one of them was named Toussaint L'Ouverture. In 1793, he led the slave revolts in Saint Domingue.
  • Following L'Ouverture's imprisonment, the rest of Haiti's slave population revolted against the French under new leadership. When they fled these plantations, they found a safe haven known as a Maroon, and on November 18, 1803 they defeated them at the Battle of Vertieres.
  • Haitian independence was declared in January 1804 and the country was liberated from French rule. Dessalines was appointed governor for life and later declared himself Emperor.
