Storyboard Text

  • In 1665 Robert Hooke was looking at cork under a microscope and saw little rectangular structures. These structures reminded him of the cells in a monastery, therefore Hooke named them cells.
  • These remind me of the cells in a monastery, so I'll name them cells.
  • In 1831, Robert Brown was investigated different plants under a microscope and noticed all of the plants cells had little circular structures that he named the nucleus.
  • All of these plants have cells containing the same structure! I'll name it the nucleus.
  • In 1839, Theodor Schwann observed several animal tissues and discovered that all animal are made from similar cells.
  • All of these animal tissues are made of cells, this means all animals must be made up of cells.
  • In 1838, Matthias Schleiden was studying different plants and realized that they all contained cells. Thanks to his findings he was able to declare that all plants are made of cells.
  • These plants all have cells!
  • In 1855, Rudolf Virchow was observing cells when he saw a cell create more cells. He then declared that pre-existing cells divide and make more cells by multiplying.
  • Holy cow that cell just divided and became two cells!
