Storyboard Text

  • Florence was born in Florence, Italy, on May 12, 1820. Florence was the youngest child born into the Nightingale family. Florence's parents moved from Italy to England when she was one year old. Her father educated her, and she was regarded fortunate to have had such an excellent education. Her mother Fanny, father William, and elder sisters Parthenope and Florence can all be seen here at their house.
  • Florence attended an orphan in Germany and remained for two weeks to serve. She learnt about cleanliness and nursing practice.
  • Her first position was as a superintendent at the Institution for Gentlewomen in Distressed Circumstances in London. Women who were destitute or unwell might go here for medical assistance. She was not compensated for her work. Nonetheless, she made several changes to her profession. She taught the nurses how to be organized, how to care for patients and how to keep things clean.

  • Many soldiers were suffering from cholera, a sickness. Florence and a group of 38 nurses arrive at Scutari, Turkey, to assist troops who are dying. She was ready to assist.
  • When Florence made her nightly rounds to check on the soldiers, she became known as the Lady with the Lamp.
  • Many people contributed to Florence's cause. She used it to establish the Nightingale Fund. This grew into the Nightingale Training School for Nurses, which opened in 1860. Florence grew really unwell and was unable to travel to several locations. Florence died at the age of 90 on August 13, 1910.
