  • Rutherford Hayes won the election
  • Rutherford Hayes was from Deleware, Ohio. Before running for president, he was the governor of Ohio. He held moderate views on Reconstruction and was known for his honesty.
  • Compromise of 1877
  • Samuel Tilden was originally from Lebanon, New York. Before running for president, he was the governor of New York. He had gained fame from fighting political corruption in NYC.
  • There were 20 disputed electoral votes. Tilden only needed 1 one of those votes to win, but if Hayes won all 20, he would have more votes than Tilden. Later, Congress created a group of 7 democrats, 7 republicans, and one independent to review the election dispute. The independent resigned and a Republican took their place. After the review, Hayes won the election.
  • The Compromise of 1877 removed all troops from Southern states.The Democrats then promised to maintain African-American rights. Hayes later took a trip to the South and declared that Reconstruction was over.
