- Scene One (Page 2)
- "Well as long as you got your complaint filed, they cant fire you."
- "I ain't worried about them firing me. They gonna fire me because I asked a question?.. I went down to Mr. Rand and asked him 'Why you got the white mens driving and the colored lifting?'"
- Scene Three (Page 39)
- "Troy why don't you admit you was too old to play in the major leagues?"
- "What do you mean too old? Don't come telling me i was too old. I just wasn't the right color."
- "I ain't done nothing to you. You done it to yourself."
- Scene Four (Pages 57&58)
- "Just cause you didn't have a chance! You just scared I'm gonna be better than you, that's all."
- Troy and Bono are sanitation workers. The scene begins with them discussing how unfair it is that all of the white men are driving, while the people of color are doing all of the lifting. Bono brings up how many people think that Troy saying this to his boss Mr. Rand could get him fired. Troy isn't worried about that at all. This scene shows a racial barrier for all of the people of color on the truck.
- Troy reveals to the audience that he wasn't allowed to play baseball years ago. Rose and Troy argue about whether he couldn't play because he was too old - over 40, or because he is black. He probably couldn't play for both of those reasons. The fact that Troy wasn't allowed to play in the major leagues was a huge barrier for Troy.
- Cory is upset and comes home yelling because Troy went to Cory's school to tell his coach that Cory is no longer allowed to play football. Troy did this because Cory lied to him about keeping his job at the A&P Market. Cory believes that Troy is secretly jealous of him because Troy is very open about how he has never had many sports opportunities. Regardless of whether Troy has a vendetta against Cory or not, Troy is putting up the same barrier for his son that he faced. His son could've gotten into college playing for sports and Troy stopped this for him.
