  • George Washington's Quarters
  • Soldiers Quarters
  • It was the 1777-1778 encampment of General George Washington´s Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. They had set up camp outside of the city of Philadelphia after loosing its capital to the main enemy, the British. Valley Forge helped reshape the army but the winter of Valley Forge was brutal and was very problematic.
  • Problems Faced by the Soldiers #1
  • George Washington rented the Isaac Potts House as his military headquarters at Valley Forge. He was able to do very well for the Winter due to his house and also him being a general allowing him to fair well against it.
  • Problems Faced by the Soldiers #2
  • Each soldier lived in a log shelter that would serve as the main remedies against the weather and lack of clothing for the men. 2,000 were laid out along military streets and took a week to build usually. 2 windows were added for the spring to each one. The insides were bare as there was no floor and they slept of poor beds.
  • Training with Baron Fredrick von Steuben
  • Coldness and sickness, mainly diseases caused many problems and went well together. The cold made it hard to travel with snow and freeze people up due to the lack of clothing. The disease spread rapidly through the area and made soldiers weak and die out.
  • Shortages were a problem as well, mainly on food and medicine. The lack of food would cause weak men and death and the lack of medicine would cause even more death due to not having it to help deal with disease.
  • Drilling with Steuben was very informational and taught well. Hired by Benjamin Franklin and accepted my Washington he did not speak but had translator people to do it for him. he did a model company of 100 chosen men and instructed them in drill, maneuver and simplified manual of arms. These men would be sent out to other areas to teach others and help the army grow.
