Storyboard Text

  • Mary is a social student, but gets distracted and doesn't finish her work. Some assignments she does with fidelity and success, but she is distracted and doesn't always come prepared for class. Often she doesn't have her notebook or a pencil with her. She sometimes comes late to class. Her homework is usually incomplete.
  • Thank you for meeting with me. Mary is a enthusiastic and social girl and is well liked by her peers. I am concerned about her focus on school work and her being prepared.
  • Meeting with Mary's mom.
  • Thanks for letting me know. I am not sure what you want me to do about that. You are the teacher.
  • Thank you for telling me. She is struggling with being back in person and having to carry her things from class to class.
  • I know that she is capable of doing well in this class. I see that in her performance in the text based questions where you she got 4/4. However, that determination and focus is not in all assignments. I see this as more of an attitude and focus issue for her than an academic one. As an example, she forgets her notebooks at home. She will start something but doesn't finish it or always turn it in. She currently has three missing homework assignments. She was late four times this week. As a concerned teacher, I want to develop a plan with you to help her learn these organizational skills to demonstrate the knowledge that she knows in full.
  • I met with Mary and came up with four goals to improve her success in the classroom. They are 1. be on time 2. have notebook and pencil every day 3. turn in assignments complete and on time 4. ask questions if she has them about an assignment BEFORE it is due. I want to check in with you and see how we can support her to meet these goals.
  • sure. I would be happy to do that.
  • These are great goals. Thank you for sharing. I can make sure she has her materials going to school each day. I will create a space at home where she can keep all of her school materials so she doesn't leave it at home. I will check her assignments to make sure they are done. If she doesn't complete it, could you please send an email?
  • yes, that would be a great plan. Thank you for suggesting it.
  • This is great to hear. I wonder if we could create a timeline to check in with her and reward her for positive progress. Could we say I will email you weekly about her progress on these goals and if she does it, you can give her a reward of some kind? If there is no progress, let's meet again in two week and see if we can adjust this plan.
  • Two weeks later
  • Mary is making positive progress. She was only late one time by three minutes. She is up to date on all assignments and is bringing her notebook and pencil more consistently to class. Although sometimes she forgets, she geninuely feels bad when she does.
