  • Rutherford Hayes Republican Party
  • Samuel Tilden Democratic Party
  • Who won the election? Why/What was the controversy?
  • Rutherford was nominated for president for the Republican party and was the governer of Ohio. Hayes was an honest man and had moderate views on reconstruction.
  • What was the Compromise of 1877?
  • Samuel Tilden was the governor of New York and nominated for president. Tilden was famous for fighting political corruption in New York City.
  • In the beginning, Tilden appeared to be winning the population vote by over 250,000 votes. But, there were 20 disputed electoral votes. Congress created a special commission of seven Republicans, 7 Democrats, and one independent to decide. The independent resigned and the spot was filled with a Republican. The commission voted 8 to 7 to award the votes to Hayes. Hayes won the election.
  • In order to settle the election dispute, this compromise included that the new government would give more aid to the region and take out all troops from Southern states. The Democrats promised to maintain African American rights.
