  • Desperate to find a solution, Senator John Crittenden of Kentucky proposed the idea of the 36(degree)30'N latitude line. President Lincoln and the Republicans found this unacceptable because they had promised no further extension of slavery.
  • Presidential Responses
  • Southerners were unhappy with how things were going and viewed the Constitutution as a contract among the independent states.
  • Southerners welcomed and encouraged secession. Southerners celebrated this idea while others might not have been so happy about it.
  • President Lincoln had a tough job nut handled the situation well. Lincoln made it peacefully clear that secession would not be allowed and he also asked the people of the South for reconciliation.
