  • The Story of the Door
  • Search for Mr. Hyde
  • Dr. Jekyll Was Quite at Ease
  • Mr. Enfield tells Mr. Utterson the story of the door. In the story, a mysterious, deformed looking man named Hyde tramples a little girl. This act disturbs everyone. Hyde is unaware of how insolent, unfeeling, and strange his actions and reactions are.
  • The Carew Murder Case
  • Enfield's story prompts Utterson to recall a strangely worded will he notarized that has often troubled his mind. The will states when his friend and client, Dr. Jekyll, dies or disappears, everything he owns should go to this detestable Hyde.
  • Incident of the Letter
  • Utterson and Jekyll attend the same dinner party. Utterson can't resist asking Jekyll about his strange will, so he inquires about it again. Jekyll maintains calm as he explains, in a roundabout way, Hyde's significance to him.
  • Incident of Dr. Lanyon
  • A maid witnesses Mr. Hyde murder an innocent old man in London's moonlight. He was carrying a letter addressed to Utterson, so the police sent for him to assist in the morning. They found incriminating evidence in Hyde's residence.
  • Jekyll gives Utterson a letter from Hyde that says he escaped police and won't be returning. Utterson doesn't know what to make of it, and shares the burden with his head clerk, Guest. Guest says the handwriting looks remarkably like Jekyll's.
  • With Hyde gone, Jekyll is socializing again. Old friends, Lanyon, Utterson, and Jekyll, visit often. Suddenly Lanyon and Jekyll take ill. Lanyon tells Utterson he will die shortly because of shock. He knows something terrible. Lanyon dies. Jekyll is a recluse again.
