  • All of the villagers started gathering in the town square for the lottery. The men and women talked amongst each other while the kids played and collected stones.
  • Rising Action
  • Mr. Summers arrives with the black box. The people start gathering in a crowd as he explains the lottery. Mrs. Hutchinson shows up late because she forgot what day it was.
  • Climax
  • Mr. Summers starts to call out the names of men who are heads of their households. He continues to call names until every family has a paper. Once all the names are called everyone opens their paper to see who got the paper with a black dot on it.
  • Falling Action
  • Bill got the paper with a dot on. Therefore, all of his family members have to draw papers again. Whoever gets the black dot this time wins the lottery.
  • Lottery
  • Bill's family draws papers again and this time his wife, Tessie, gets the paper with the black dot. Mr Summers tells everyone that they need to hurry up. Therefore, people begin to pick up stones.

  • A stone strikes Tessie on the side of the head as she screams while the village's oldest man, Warner, encourages people to keep going.
