  • Many people support the argument that the British colonialism was a positive for India with things like freedom of speech and press. Higher political knowledge and aspirations. Improvement of government in the native states. Security of life and property. Here are some things in which the English influenced life in India.
  • The influence of the West on Indian culture, cuisine, clothing, literature and style was apparent.
  • The British had a lot of impact and influence on Indian food. The Portuguese first made pav, but it was during British colonial rule when the bakery industry flourished and milk and wheat became more widely used in Indian sweets. Thus, new foods were introduced to Indian cuisine, including bread, cakes, toast, boiled eggs, and even ice cream.
  • They also introduced cocoa and beer in India. They brought in the use of tea, coffee, dining tables, bars etc. Many people may not know this, but vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and cauliflower were not familiar to Indian cuisine at the time, and fruits such as pineapples and apples. Many dishes such as soups, chicken tikka masala, chicken vindaloo and chutneys have evolved under the influence of the British to Indian cuisine.
  • The influence of Western literature on Indian literature was excessive. Writing poetry was a Rig Vedic practice. However, the influence of English literature, novels, short stories, essays and contemporary Indian drama has made Shakespeare part of the Indian curriculum and his works have been translated into several Indian languages.
  • Full pants, shirts, shoes, suit and ties for men etc. were used by the educated Indians too. The modem etiquettes like showing gestures in the form of ‘good morning’, ‘good afternoon’, ‘good night’, ‘good bye’, ‘see you’, ‘Best of luck’, ‘ta-ta’, ‘bye-bye’ etc. were the contributions of the West to Indian culture.
