Storyboard Text

  • Today we are going to learn about matter, which is anything that has mass and takes up space.
  • We will also learn about elements of matter that are chemically interconverted, and are part of the periodic table.
  • Each element has an atomic number, which is the amount of protons and electrons it has; an atomic weight/mass, which is the amount of mass in has; protons (subatomic particles with a positive charge) and neutrons (subatomic particles with a neutral charge); and an atomic number, the amount of electrons and electric charge it has.
  • This is an atom it is the building block of all matter. Molecules themselves, are group of atoms. Atoms are building blocks of elements that can combine to make compounds (two elements that chemically bonded together) and mixture (two elements mixed together)
  • On the periodic table on this board, you can see metalloids (a combination of metals/nonmetals), nonmetals (elements that have no metal in them), metals (that have metallic properties), and groups (sets of elements with similar properties, they are in columns, horizontal rows are called periods).
  • Chemical properties are characteristic of a substance that is observed during a reaction in which the chemical composition changes. A Physical property is a characteristic of matter that may be observed and measured without changing the chemical identity of a sample.
  • A solution is a homogenous mixture of two or more substances in relative amounts that can be varied continuously up to what is called the limit of solubility. A homogenous mixture is a mixture with a uniform composition. Yet, a heterogenous mixture has two or more ingredients or phases.
