  • The Crucible, Act 2: Poppet Strip
  • Mary Warren starts making a poppet in the courtroom because she gets bored during the witch trials. He notices Abigail nearby, who starts to plan something to look for Elizabeth.
  • Abigail saw an opportunity to execute her plan when Mary Warren left the poppet unattended. Without Mary Warren's knowledge, Abigail inserts a needle into the poppet's stomach and leaves it there.
  • Later that day, while eating dinner with Parris, Abigail suddenly passed out from pain and dropped to the ground. Later, we would learn that the source of her excruciating discomfort was actually a needle that had become stuck in her stomach. She would then go on to accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft and blame her for it.
  • Elizabeth is taken into custody by Cheever on suspicion of witchcraft that evening, the day of the trial. A poppet Elizabeth received from Mary Warren that had a needle stuck in its torso served as the proof he discovered to support his theory. People viewed this as sufficient evidence because Abigail had accused Elizabeth of engaging in this type of witchcraft, and it appeared that she was right.
