  • Hi everyone! I just learned about using angles of elevation and depression to find length of height and distance. I want to show y'all how this works, come with me around town and I will show you how to do it in your everyday life!
  • So here is our first real-world application. To understand the best to think of this as a triangle. We know the distance between me and the church is 50 feet. The approximate angle of elevation is 60 degrees. What is the height of the church?
  • So using a trig function, tangent, we can find the height of the church by taking the tangent of 60 degrees and multiplying it by 50 (feet) to get approximately 87 feet. Therefore the height of the church is about 87 feet.
  • Now just for funsies, let's try to find the hypotenuse of this triangle using the Pythagorean theorem. Remember the height is 87 feet and the distance from me to the church is 50 feet
  • Pythagorean theorem is a^2 + b^2 = c^2. In this case that is 87^2 + 50^2 = c^2. In this case, c is the hypotenuse.Therefore that is 10069 = c^2. C is equal to about 100 feet.
  • Since that was fun, let's try to find the sine and cos of this triangle using the 60-degree angle of elevation. Do remember what the triangle sides equaled to.
