  • "I am too much a believer of man to think that in nature there is one colour superior to another, for me a man is only a MAN!!
  • Christopher Columbus sighted the island that he called La Isla Española. The island's indiginous population, forced to mine for gold, was devastated by European diseases and brutal working conditions. After the main gold mines were exhausted the Spanish were succeeded by the French who established their own permanent settlements, which led to the splitting of Hispaniola into 2 groups French and Spanish.
  • Jean-Jauques Dessalines
  • Though not considered a 'Main' leader. He was a catalyst in the Haitian revolution. He was originally in Jamaica but was sold to a plantation owner in Saint. Domingue. On August 21st, 1791, the day before the revolution began, a Voudoo ceremony was held by Dutty Boukman. The ceremony was a sign of rebellion as the slaves were forbidden to practice this 'cult' by the slave owners. This ceremony by Boukman sparked the Haitian Revolution.
  • Henri Christophe
  • Touissant was a born slave who was very smart and learnt how to read and write at age 6 so he ranked up very quickly. He finally gained freedom and became a military leader for the French and taught the Haitian slaves how to fight. Which resulted in them winning against the French sent by Napoleon (french leader).
  • Haiti Is Indepedent (2001)
  • He was born in 1758 and was enslaved by the French colony. He served as an officer in he French army and later because Touissant second hand. When Touissant was captured he was names the new leader of the revolution. Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1805 constitution. Under Dessalines, Haiti became the first country to permanently abolish slavery.
  • He was a former slave in Grenada which was a British colony and was sold to a French slaveowner in Haiti by his father. He was a military leader and was second to Dessalines during the fight for independence. Christophe would side with the slaves despite his free status and severe as one of the most important Generals for most of the conflict
  • Dessalines declared the nation independent and renamed it Haiti. France became the first nation to recognize its independence. European slavery was ended
