- Parent involvement in a students education can provide more opportunities for success for said student, especially if that student is disabled.
- Something that can deeply hinder a parents ability to have open communication with their child's teacher would be language barriers and religious or political differences.
- Typically, white families have better successes with gaining access to the various services provided to them because they have the means to access these services understand the rights afforded to them.
- Parents who do not have open communication with the education team often let the school hold the reigns on their students education. This does not promote growth or access of services when compared to an involved parent.
- Bias plays a role in the effectiveness of parent and teacher communication. The education team can underestimate the ability of a parent to participate in the IEP process.
- Something to combat this issue is to provide advocates for families. These advocates can ensure proper translation of IEP and specific legal terms so that every family has 100% trust in the education provided to their. child.
