Storyboard Text

  • The back of the plane wreckage (Vagina)
  • We have to move or the fire will kill us, we have to move through the jungle
  • The jungle (Cervix)
  • This place is a maze! Which way are we supposed to go?
  • The front of the plane (Uterus)
  • ............(The sperm must die)
  • What is this thing?
  • 1 : Approximately 250 million sperm enter the vagina, most of them die (99%!) within 30 minutes. 2 : Defenses ; Sperm destroyed by deadly acids that protect the vagina from pathogens.
  • The trek through the mountain (Fallopian tubes)
  • We are almost to the point where the radio will work
  • 1 : 60,000 remaining sperm must navigate through the cervix located at the far end of the vagina. 2 : The cervix usually plugs shut with mucus to defend against invading pathogens. However during ovulation, estrogen flows from the ovary to the uterus, which softens the mucus to make it watery allowing (some) of the sperm to make it through. 3 : Sperm must swim single file through the tiny channels found in the cervical canal. Most of them will die because they get stuck or lost in one of the tens of thousands of passageways
  • The top of the mountain (Fertilization)
  • We finally got the top and got the radio working, now we need a safer place to go.
  • 1 : Approximately 3000 sperm remain and must navigate through the uterus to the Fallopian tube. 2 : Muscular contractions of the uterus will help to propel sperm in the direction of the correct Fallopian tube on the side of the egg3 : Sperm attacked by Leukocytes (White blood cell army that is launched by the bodies immune system). 4 : Remaining sperm must search for the doorway to the Fallopian tube.
  • The cave (Implantation)
  • (Forgot to include the Uteroltubal junction so I'll put it here, 1 : Doorway to the Fallopian tube. 2 : Sperm must show the proper swimming characteristics and display the correct molecular recognition to be allowed through.) 1 : Approximately 10 - 30 sperm remain. Once inside sperm are safe from leukocyte attack. 2 : Sperm are provided with nourishment from the Fallopian tube (ph levels, ion concentration stabilization) so they can stay alive for several hours, even days.
  • 1 : The remaining sperm must attempt to find the egg at the upper end of the Fallopian tube. The egg releases chemicals that the sperm can sense and they begin to move more quickly. 2 : The sperm makes contact with the "outer coat" of the egg and has a bag of enzymes on it's head that explodes, which allows it to penetrate the "outer coat".
  • 1 : The zygote (union of sperm and egg) travels down the fallopian tubes towards the uterus, cells begin dividing. On day four the tiny bundle of cells is named a blastocyst. 2 : Five days later, the embryo breaks out of itś protective shell and implants in the wall of the uterus and begins growing.
  • Finally a safe place to stay!
