  • Causes of the War
  • Sea Battles
  • Land Battles
  • The British didn't like the US trading with their enemies, and Madison said he wouldn't as long as they stop seizing American ships. They continued to seize ships though and impress American sailors. On top of that, he found that Indians were using British guns. This pushed Madison enough to decide that he needed to go to war to stop Britain from harassing them.
  • Trouble with Native Americans
  • On September 10, 1813, a U.S. naval force under command of Oliver Hazard Perry attacked and defeated the British in a major battle. They captured a British fleet of six ships on Lake Erie. This was a big score for the US as they could add the ships to their Navy. The victory also encouraged Americans to push into Upper Canada, but the land battles didn't go as good as the US thought.
  • The Battle of New Orleans
  • After time, James Madison chose to abandon isolationism. They went to war with Britain and mainly attacked Upper Canada and Europe. The war swayed between the two, and eventually Britain drove the Americans back. Britain also invaded place like Maryland and Washington DC, so Americans plans to conquer Canada were put to an end.
  • Results of the War
  • After America had started to settle in, people started to expand west into the Native American's territory. The Indians did not take this kindly, and small battles broke out such as when Indiana governor William Henry Harrison fought against Shawnee warriors at Tippecanoe Creek. The Americans won that battle, but found out that the Native Americans were using British guns. This enraged many Americans and gave another good reason on why to go to war with Britain.
  • A British fleet had surrendered to U.S. forces after the Battle of Lake Champlain in New York. This made the desire to continue war slim, but British forces had already launched an attack on New Orleans. The US defeated them however and the British lost about 2,000 troops, and the US lost only about 70. However, this battle was unnecessary, because a peace treaty was signed ending the war. News didn't reach until after the battle.
  • After the war, no one really won, but both sides claimed victory. But, it had 3 main impacts on the US. The first was it weakened Indian resistance in the Northwest Territory. Second, the war gave many people confidence that it was the second war of independence. Lastly, it badly damaged the federalists and their party fell apart.
