- The beginning of this chapter starts by explaining where Haroun and Rashid live. It is a very sad, depressing country, but Rashid, Haroun's father is a storyteller and he brings happiness to the people in his town. Rashid's wife thinks what he does is foolish so she ran away with their neighbor. Rashid was invited to tell stories in another town but he couldn't speak up since his subscription to the story water was canceled, so he was kicked out.
- Chapter 4 - An Iff and a Butt
- Mr. Butt, the mail coach driver agreed to take Rashid and Haroun to The Dull Lake before sunset. Mr. Butt drove extremely fast and didn't pick up the mail so he could keep his promise to Haroun. Whenever they arrived at the Valley of K, Haroun and Rashid were greeted by Mr. Buttoo who walked them to The Dull Lake and they all got on a boat shaped like a swan.
- Chapter 5 - About Guppees and Chupwalas
- After Haroun and Rashid got on the swan boat, the mist of misery approached them. Haroun realized that it was the Moody Land, one of the places from his father's stories. He told everyone to calm down so they'd all be safe. The Khalifas were taken to their beautiful hotel room, but a genie in his bathroom woke Haroun in the middle of the night. The genie told Haroun about the magic story water and agreed to take him to Gup City.
- Chapter 6 - The Spy's Story
- The Water Genie lets Haroun pick a bird that they'll travel on; he picks a Hoopoe. The Water Genie then took Haroun to The Ocean of the Streams of Story. Haroun drank some of the story water, which resulted in him imagining himself in a story, except the story didn't end how it should've. This led to the characters realizing that the story water had been polluted. This could mean war. said the water genie.
