Storyboard Text

  • Digestion breaks down large insoluble food moleculesinto small soluble molecules. These molecules are transported by the blood throughout the body to the cells that need them.
  • Respiration is a chemical processtakes place in the mitochondria of plant and animal cellsuses glucose as an energy sourceis divided in two typesAEROBIC RESPIRATIONANAEROBIC RESPIRATION
  • These athletes are racing to the finish line. Their muscles need energy to work so and allow the athlete to move (run).
  • AEROBIC RESPRATION IN ANIMALS AND PLANTSglucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + 38ATPoxygen Respiration in in rbc oxygen mitochondrion DIFFUSION glucose glucose
  • Glucose is the end product of carbohydrate digestion. Glucose is used by cells as an energy source.
  • What's wrong?
  • OW OW OW OW!!!
  • CRAMP!!!
  • Mitochondria are the power houses of cells where both aerobic and anaerobic respiration take place. Anaerobic respiration in yeast is called fermentation.
  • AEROBIC RESPRATION IN ANIMALS AND PLANTSglucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + 38ATPANAEROBIC RESPIRATION IN ANIMALSglucose lactic acid + 2ATP OXYGEN DEBTFERMENTATION IN YEASTSglucose ethanol + carbon dioxide
  • Aerobic respiration requires glucose and oxygen. The blood supplies both the cells. These molecules diffuse into the mitochondria of cells where respiration takes place.
  • Sometimes our energy demand is greater than the oxygen supply. Anaerobic respiration in animals ensure a supply of energy even if oxygen is limited. This produces lactic acid which builds up in the muscles and causes cramps.
  • During anaerobic respiration in humans, the cells incur an oxygen debt with the build up of lactic acid. This debt is repaid when oxygen is available to oxidize the acid and release energy. Fermentation important in alcohol and bread industries.
