- The beginning of the story. Actions take place in the living room. On the right is Mrs. Mallard. On the left are her sister Josephine and her husband's friend Richards.

- Mrs.Mallard's sister talks about her husband's death (in broken sentences). This makes her cry.

- She goes in her grief to her room. Nobody follows her.A window is open in her room.
- She had died of heart disease - of joy that kills.
- It's spring outside. She breathes in the fresh air, sees green treetops and blue skies with beautiful clouds. She realizes the happiness of freedom. Meanwhile, her sister Josephine knocks on closed door.
