Storyboard Text

  • Fort Sumter, a federal fort located in Charleston Harbor in South Carolina, refused to surrender to the Confederates. Commander Major Anderson was involved as well as his troops. This happened at the Charleston Harbor on April 11, 1861 in the middle of the night. This happened when Beauregard gave the order to open fire. The next afternoon Major Anderson surrendered. This was because the unions members surrendered to Fort Sumter.
  • The Confederates learned of a supply of shoes in the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and went to investigate. There, on July 1, 1863, they ran into Union troops. Both sides called for reinforcements, and the Battle of Gettysburg was on. The union and confederates were in the battle. This happened because both of the troops were aiming for something and on the way they ran into each other and they fought it out.
  • General William Tecumseh Sherman’s March to the Sea followed his successful attempts to take Atlanta, which helped Lincoln get reelected. He and the U.S. Army commander, Ulysses S.Grant believed that the Civil War would end only if the Confederacy was broken emotionally and physically. November 15, 1864 – December 21, 1864.
