  • Of course! In Athens, we have a direct democracy. In our Direct Democracy, we as citizens vote on EVERYTHING. We vote on laws, issues and more, and vote directly for ourselves, We people make decisions individually.
  • Hi, my name's Paige! I'm from the future and was wondering if you could tell me about the government in Athens. Could you help me out?
  • Our Direct Democracy is different from a Republic because our rights can be taken away by mob rule. There is also no limits on the government!
  • Your welcome! Thank you for asking!
  • Thank you for all of this information! I have to travel back to my time now, so bye!
  • How is a direct democracy different from a republic?
  • Huh. So a direct democracy is ruled by the people, and they can just make their own laws?
  • Today, the U.S has a Republic form of government. In our Republic us people hold power, but we elect people called representatives to use that power on how they see fit. To tell you some more, I'm going to travel to the president and see what he knows!
  • Ok! I've successfully traveled back to my time, 2021. Let me explain what I know about the republic form of government and the republic in the U.S.
  • I'd love to! In any republic, the government is usually based on a written document. The U.S republic government is based on the Constitution, which is our highest law in the land. The government and citizens must follow it.
  • Hello Mr. President! I was wondering if you could explain about what our republic is like.
  • Well, in a republic peoples rights are promised and their rights cannot be taken away like in a direct democracy. Also, there are limits on a republic government, and laws are placed as limits. A republic government is ruled by law.
  • What's so different about a republic compared to a direct democracy?
  • Actually... It's quite different. The representatives that the citizens elect get to make the laws, and the republic form of government is ruled by law.
  • No problem! It's very important to learn these things.
  • Ok, so in a republic do the citizens get to make laws? I know that in a direct democracy they do...
  • Thank you for helping me understand more about our government!
