- Uly, after escaping his father and going into the forest, and misses a baby possum, he finds Mia, dangling from a rope in Ms.Potter's house. Mia starts being playful, which Uly does not like one bit. Than Mia suggests to clean Uly, which is surprising as his sisters only cleaned him because her mom , than Uly cleans her and they set of to find her mom, and do not part ways for a very long time.
- They start telling each other stories, but Uly decides not to tell about his family as than "she would know that his family thought he was as disposable as a gopher’s toenails." Mia than sniffes out centipedes with peaches, but Uly does not want to go, and makes up "The Golgathursh" as a way to scare Mia out of heading north. After a huge argument, after which Uly says “You said the yellow wasn’t real either! But it still killed your brothers and sister!" This makes Mia angry, and she says “Fine. Stay here and die. See if I care.” Then Uly meets a bird and raccoon, who both help Uly try to find her. He then follows that direction, but gets into the lake, and finds Mia, but when swimming to her, his withered paw gets bitten off by the Golgathursh, but he gets out alive.
- After the encounter with the Golgathursh, they get to their first fork in the road, where they could go two different directions, Mia checks the road route, but upon seeing humans, goes the mountain route. About halfway up the mountain, Mia smells the scent of lilac, which is the scent of Uly's father, Mr.Scratch. Then finally, when they are close to the top of the hill, Uly decides that he can not meet his father, while Mia can not go back to the cage, and they say goodbye. They fought a badger, and Mr.Scratch intervened and defeated the badger, however now Mr.Scratch brings Mia back to his kingdom. They meet Mercy and Odette, vixens of Mr.Scratch, who reveals himself as Wynn. She asks Wynn for peaches and centipedes, and once Wynn goes to get them, he goes to feed Uly, and tend to his wounds. Then, Uly smells the scent of his mother and says “My mom’s up there. I can smell her." He also says that her mom is missing part of an ear. When Mia goes to check, both Mercy and Odette are missing parts of their ears. After she got with them, she started hopping and saw what she needed. "At Mia’s first hop, Odette’s lips had curled ever so slightly. But Mercy’s eyes had softened." Mia knew that Mercy was Uly's mother at once. Mercy finds Uly and drags him back. Mia tries to distract Wynn and she says “Anything is better than you." Wynn chases after Mia, and while trying to escape Wynn is trapped by a fox trap made by humans.
