  • In the early to mid-1800s, there were several faculty members who tried to reform their respective universities, such as Professor George Ticknor in Harvard, Francis Wayland at Brown and Henry Tappan at Michigan. Though they failed, this is where the development of the modern American university was initiated.
  • I must reform my university but how?
  • Professor Ticknor
  • Francis Wayland
  • Me too.
  • Henry Tappan
  • Me three.
  • In 1876, Daniel Gilman became the president of the new John Hopkins University, which was a graduate school with a heavy emphasis on research. Charles Eliot, who was the president at Harvard, followed in Gilman's footsteps by focusing on Harvard as a graduate school, professional school, and research institution.
  • Yay, I'm the president and I can do whatever I want! Here comes grad school and research!
  • Daniel Gilman
  • Charles Eliot
  • That's a great idea!
  • Gilman, I love you.
  • Flexner
  • Another breakthrough was that Charles Eliot at Harvard allowed students to pick their own courses of study, which led to the development of the elective system that we still have today. Other universities that quickly followed are Cornell, Michigan, Columbia, Minnesota, Stanford, Chicago, Wisconsin and California. Yale and Princeton unfortunately lagged behind.
  • Now you can pick whatever courses you want..like Memes 101.
  • Charles Eliot
  • Hurrah for the elective system!
  • Other universities
  • Princeton and Yale
  • Umm..what's going on?
  • The elective system gave professors a lot of freedom to structure their courses the way they want. This led to an explosion in the number of courses, as there were thousands of courses to pick from in a university catalogue. And the modern university was born.
  • I'm gonna teach Harry Potter 101!
  • I'm gonna teach Men's Studies 101!
  • We need more women in this "modern" university.
  • Then came the land grant movement which resulted in the schools of agriculture, engineering, home economics, business administration and more. This allowed students of all socioeconomic backgrounds to enroll in universities. Consequently, more contacts were created within the community, which led to university athletics.
  • Yay, now we can all go to university and get the job we want!
  • I just wanna watch football. Go bulldogs!
  • In the 1930s, there was a counterreformation influenced by British concepts; however, this caused a greater emphasis on undergraduate student life. British elements, such as residence halls, intramural playfields, libraries, became popular. Overall, the American modern university had British influence in their student life, German influence in graduate life and research, and American influence in terms of access to the public.
  • The USA
