  • How and in what ways did the French Revolution disrupt systems of power in place at the time?
  • Thesis: France's tumultuous 10 year revolution resulted in a minor reformation of its class divided monarchy into a more stable democracy the people of France had been fighting for. 
  • Systems of Power Before
  • We're the Third Estate and make up 96% of the population, but we have no rights or privileges!
  • We're the First Estate and can make people pay taxes known as the tithe!
  • We're nobles, known as the Second Estate, and we don't pay taxes!

  • I'm King Louis XVI and I have complete control over France.
  • I spend money on what I want and how I want it. No one can stop me because of what's called "royal absolutism."

  • We're in a financial crisis!
  • We haven't eaten properly in months!
  • We want more say in the government!

  • The Revolution
  • The year was 1789. Members of the 3rd Estate met on a tennis court.
  • They wrote up a Constitution, their goal to achieve a more stable, equal democracy.
  • We want a more democratic system where the King can't do anything he wishes!
  • Their goal, however, was only partially achieved.
